The Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla is one amazing place to have your wedding. The outside Patio looks out upon the Pacific ocean. Having your ceremony end as the sun is setting in the background is very possible here, and even without having the sunset the view looking out to the vast pacific ocean is amazing. Nancy Rubins’ iconic sculpture installation, “Pleasure Point” hangs right over the patio and looks amazing from the beach but even more so standing below, your guests are for sure going to be talking about this. The inside is of course full of contemporary art, some of which may be closed off but you will at least have some really cool contemporary (current) artwork on display during your wedding reception. I’ve always been fond of the beautiful clean white walls that museums and galleries have. The white walls simplify the environment and best highlight the Art that is inside. The lights are of the highest quality since they need to show the Art. My style of wedding photography is perfectly suited to this venue and what if offers and I absolutely love working here.

San Diego Botanic Garden wedding | Mike and Sharon (1/2)

I’m used to doing outdoor weddings in natural environments, but nothing has been as lush and green as Mike & Sharons San Diego botanic garden wedding. Not only is the botanical garden a great place to hold a wedding due to it’s private setting and all the many types of gardens and plants it holds, but the area surrounding the San Diego botanic garden is pretty awesome also. The beaches are a short 10mins away from the garden. The surfer town of Leucadia & Encinitas also just down the road, so if you want your wedding photographer to have countless areas in which to shoot then you really can’t go wrong with the San Diego Botanic Gardens for your wedding venue.

We started the day photographing the getting ready at two separate houses from airbnb. If you haven’t heard of Airbnb I highly suggest checking the site out and the many options it has for accommodation. I never stay in hotels anymore, why would I when for the same price as a Hilton room for a night I could be staying in a private home by the beach for the same cost. It’s a no brainer for me. Don’t get me wrong hotels are nice and you can totally spoil yourself at one, which is fair enough since it’s your wedding. Since Pannikins coffee house was a 5-minute drive from both houses, and since it’s a personal favorite place for Sharon and Mike to grab a coffee and hang out we decided to do a quick first look there and move inside to take a few images. It’ wasn’t long before the humidity inside forced us outside to take for a portrait session. Like with any venue I like to scout the area to see what it holds and what I can do photographically speaking. So I had a few spots lined up that really typify the surf culture of Encinitas and Leucadia, and give the couple a totally different look to that found in the San Diego Botanic Gardens.

Here are a few images from the first half of the day in and around Encinitas and Leucadia. I will be posting more from the actual wedding ceremony and portrait session at the San Diego botanical gardens next.

Palomar Mountain Wedding | Bailey’s Palomar Resort

Palomar Mountain Weddings are amazing. Palomar Mountain is a great place to visit on any day; with beautiful forest and mountain meadows, large pine, fir and cedar trees make this state park the only place to get the sierra Nevada in San Diego.

With stunning views and countless places to photograph at this place is a photographers dream as well as the couples who want nature and mountains part of there wedding day. If you manage to stay the night, then it’s very possible you will see the stars shining brightly at night. Wake up to the smell of nature, surrounded by pine, fir and cedar tree and stay for 3 days at Baileys Palomar Resort, using the cabins, inviting people to camp out and really make the most of this stunning place. This won’t be a normal wedding, with the varying levels of stress of travel, moving locations etc. Just being here will make you feel relaxed, no stress is needed, just take it easy and enjoy your special day having Palomar Mountain Wedding in stunning surroundings. You won’t regret it!

Lindsay and Alex, invited friends and family to stay with them for there Palomar Mountain Wedding at Baileys Lodge. Some guest stayed in the small cabins, some camped, whilst the elder family members stayed in the main house, which is somewhat like the little house on the prairie. They took there time and enjoyed the place, having arrived a few days before there wedding. You could call it a destination wedding, for those coming from out of town and state, and country it was. But it was worth it, not a typical wedding at all. It was a holiday for all and a beautiful way to celebrate the coming together of Alex & Lindsay. Long after the ceremony had finished and most people retired to the bed for the night, Alex & Lindsay and some very close friends gathered around a bonfire and played guitar. It was a great way to see out such a special day!

Joshua Tree Engagement

While primarily known for it’s serene desert landscapes and beautiful camping areas, the town and area surrounding Joshua Tree, California is also a fantastic destination for any couple’s engagement photos. Not only does it offer a wonderfully simple background with a myriad of photo opportunities, but is also home to a number of beautifully constructed overnight rentals.

Joshua Tree Engagement Lifestyle Shoot

The national park, adjacent to the town itself, delivers breathtaking vistas that are not only a testament to the wonder of nature, but also serve to showcase the couples who choose to have a Joshua Tree Engagement. Joshua Tree’s aesthetic, as opposed to the windswept dunes of Anza Borrego, offers more plain-like views, dotted with shrubs and the trees after which the state park is named.

Aside from the beauty unique to the desert scene, the area also plays host to a number of wonderfully constructed overnight rentals, as mentioned above. The strength of these rentals’ architectural aesthetic combined with the surrounding desert-scape make for an enticingly beautiful set up when thinking through possible locations in which to capture one’s engagement photos. These well-curated overnight spaces are typically small, acting more as beautifully decorated studio apartments than hotel rooms. Not only are they comfortable in décor and striking in terms of architecture, but they are also private, offering a space that is far removed from bustling streets, and offering those who decide to stay a quiet and peaceful holiday.

MY WEDDING WEBSITE HAS A NEW HOME

Pine Hills Lodge Wedding | Pine Hills lodge is a beautiful venue for your wedding celebration. Nestled high up at 4000ft in the Julian, CA; surrounded by pines and lush green undergrowths this venue is one of great solitude and wonderful nature. At the last wedding I photographed at Pine Lodge we were greeted by deer roaming the grounds as the doors opens at the end of the night, it was a perfect way to end the wedding celebrations.

A pine hills lodge wedding would be a fantastic place for those who want a wedding far away from the city lights, yet not really that far away that it becomes a hassle to get there. Invite your guest to stay at one of the cabins nestled in the area around the lodge itself and have them experience a side of southern California that not many would expect to see. Wildlife and stunning views and the perfect distance from the city of Julian itself, Pine Hills lodge really is a wedding in nature without the any distractions.

A Pine Hills Lodge Wedding will offer you an abundance of options when it comes to the portraits of the married couple. Surrounded by sprawling views that peak out from in the pines gives you a stunning setting and views far reaching and ones that are untouched by the ruins of City culture. Or perhaps you want to make the most of the pines and lush greens and use them in your photographs. What is for sure is that a Pine Hills Lodge Wedding would offer you lots in the way of natures best sights.

The Pine Hills lodge itself is 100+ years old and you can really tell when walking inside for the first time. The low wooden beams, the original wooden floors are just two things that come straight to mind. It’s really worth a visit if you’re looking for this kind of setting for you wedding.

Cabrillo National Monument is a well-known tourist spot in San Diego. It’s an extremely beautiful place with stunning views of the city of San Diego, as well as the vast Pacific Ocean. You know that type of view that makes you feel so small. What is not so well known is that you can hold Weddings here also. The Old Point Loma Lighthouse sits highest at the Cabrillo National Monument Park. My opinion is that this is one of the best places to hold a wedding ceremony. With the Old Point Loma Lighthouse and the Pacific Ocean as potential backdrops for your ceremony you will be spoilt for choice at the Cabrillo National Monument.

To really get the best out of the place it’s all about timing. A Cabrillo National Monument Wedding will look best when the sun is in its final hours. So why not hold a Sunset wedding ceremony and really get those California Golden colors in your images. Take a look at Cheri and James’s Cabrillo National Monument Wedding and judge for yourself. You just don’t get the same warm golden look at any other time of the day. Not to mention the gorgeous sun flare that strikes the images to give depth to your images.

Having a Cabrillo National Monument is to have a luxury wedding in my opinion. Sure you can spend a fortune on venues and golf courses for a wedding ceremony, but nothing beats the simple elegance of the minimalist Pacific Ocean. Some things money just can’t buy and this view really is one of those things, it’s priceless.

Make your wedding the one that everyone remembers and have it here at the Cabrillo National Monument. Keep those memories alive by having a story telling wedding photographer like myself photograph it for you. I would be honored to do so.

Red Barn Ranch Wedding

Celebrated at the beautiful Red Barn Ranch in Pauma Valley, Jennifer and Andrew’s wedding was nothing short of picturesque. The day began at Pala Casino Hotel, where the couple prepared for the upcoming ceremony. From the hotel, guests and wedding party were transported by shuttle to the rural Red Barn Ranch. The ceremony, officiated by the lovely couple’s pastor, was performed at sunset, and was captured by John Newsome Photography.

As the sun sank in the west, the soft light filtered through the willowy pepper trees, gently lighting up the faces of the bride and groom. Just to the east, family-style banquet tables had been set with floral arrangements, provided by Bella Blooms, alongside stacks of gently aged hard-cover books. Patti of Red Barn Ranch helped the wedding attendee’s transition from ceremony site to dining area, while Bekker’s Catering provided the guests with a wonderfully filling meal. Toasts were given as the sun disappeared behind the hills. As the sky darkened, strings of market lights were lit from tree to tree above the dining area as well as in the spacious red barn just up the hill, from which Red Barn Ranch acquired its name.

Guests filtered into the beautifully decorated barn, complete with antique furniture and ten foot high chiffon curtains at both ends, to witness the first dance. Bite size desserts were provided by Heather Miller once the newly-wed couple had cut the their specially made single tier cake. The dance floor was then opened and those in attendance proudly showcased their dancing skills.

As the night lengthened and the music slowed, shuttles were provided for the guests from Red Barn Ranch back to their rooms at the hotel.

Smoothly played out and well planned, Jennifer and Andrew’s wedding was beautiful in every way and was what every wedding should be: a celebration of not only what made this couple unique, but also of the community that brought them together.

Nestled between Balboa Park and Little Italy, Banker’s Hill is a great location in general, but for a bride and groom who want to maximize what the city has to offer for their wedding day, than there is no place more conveniently-located in San Diego than this urban venue in Bankers Hill. With a keen eye for location, the owners of Banker’s Hill the restaurant set up shop, and we all stand to benefit.

The ivy growing up the front wall is stunning and really gives Banker’s Hill a secret garden kind of feel in the middle of the city, especially coupled with the open-air patio. I also really love the huge glass doors in the entrance; they illuminate the space and pivot so they can be opened or closed, options that change the place in subtle ways. But enough about what I like about the place… Did I mention the food?! Don’t get me started!

The architecture and interior design of Banker’s Hill is contemporary, mixing rustic and urban aesthetics to create a space that is best left to speak for itself. That said, every couple seeks to transform their venue so that it reflects their relationship to each other and who they are as people. Your details are very important in achieving this expression. But what if you didn’t have to do all that much to make a venue special for you? Because Banker’s Hill Restaurant is so tastefully designed, it’s safe to say you could keep the transformations to a minimum.

Ok… so what makes Banker’s Hill the perfect wedding venue in San Diego for you? First, the ivy-covered outdoor walls are… shall I say it again? Stunning! There are also beautiful, wooden paneled walls inside that only serve to highlight the amazing people enjoying your reception. Third, the low lighting creates a romantic ambience, which contributes to a warm and intimate feeling that everyone can feel even if they can’t describe it. Fourth, details are at a minimum (sweet!), and the details they do have are creative, eclectic, and one of a kind. Fifth, can you imagine booking a place that already has spectacular tables? People pay lots of money for the kind of rustic, wooden tables at Banker’s Hill. These tables are sturdy, working tables with beautiful metal details, and it would simply be a travesty to cover up their splendor with tablecloths. These tables only need food and good people.

I loved photographing Cheri and James’s beautiful wedding at Banker’s Hill, and I can’t wait to go back for yours!

The Lafayette Hotel Wedding San Diego | Julie & Dan

When Julie and Dan contacted me about there planned Lafayette Hotel wedding I must admit I got very excited about the possibility of shooting a wedding there. I’ve been to many indoor wedding venues and a large majority are bland, lack character and don’t offer much in the way of unique. It’s why most of my weddings clients choose to go outdoors, okay the weather helps with that also. The Lafayette however is a different breed of hotel. It’s got bags of style as soon as you walk in, offering retro decor and sharp colors and a pool surrounded by rooms that kind of remind me of the Saguaro in Palm Springs. Plenty of non hotel guests and locals come in the summer to chill by the pool, myself included, it’s got that vibe and it’s non pretentious. It’s cool and I knew before Julie and Dan contacted me, so I was stoked they got in touch with me.

Julie and Dan live on the East Coast, so we met on Skype, with the help of cell phones for sound, which made for an interesting first meet/talk. Straight away I liked them, cool and super chilled, my kind of people. I knew it would be a fun wedding with these two and it was. It must have been the most humid day of the year so it was a good thing the wedding was all indoors, I remember pitying the wedding photographers working outdoor weddings that day. We all battled through nonetheless with regular room breaks to cool down and stop the sweat creeping, okay I was dripping throughout but thats fine with me as I’m behind the camera always moving. We started early at a nice and relaxed pace, but then as the ceremony time loomed things started to speed up and before we knew it the guests had arrived and the ceremony was about to start. Just check out the ceremony room, eclectic chairs for the guests seating, (yeah you would pay a fortune to rent these out) and colorful umbrellas hanging from the ceiling and a few tropical plants scattered around the ceremony site. It’s nerve racking walking out to a lot of people knowing all eyes are on you, but I think these two handled the situation perfect. The ceremony was swift but long enough to get a few different perspectives, this is where having a second photographer present helps a bunch, thanks Esteban!

As soon as the ceremony ended the sun was close to setting so moving fast with family portraits was a priority, this way I could have time alone with the couple for the romantic portraits with just enough of that golden light of California. Esteban my associate and trusted second photographer got some fantastic cocktail hour candids whilst I was shooting the couple, another great reason to have two photographers at your wedding! The classic lafayette sign and the clean white beams and columns that support the vivid brick that is the building of the lafayette, makes for a great backdrop for some portraits whilst also taking the couple away from the friends and family that want to congratulate the newly weds ( this is a wedding photographers nightmare when working with a tight timeline). After the taking images of Julie and Dan together I had a small amount of time to get some decor details of the ballroom downstairs before the wedding guests started coming in, just enough time! I didn’t realize until only a few days before that part of “Top Gun” was filmed in the ballroom, the piano scene I believe? The lafayette ballroom has really nice lighting, not like that crazy orange light like a lot of ballrooms, so it was very pleasant shooting there. The grand entrance, the toasts, first dance and food all passed and it was party time and boy did the guests know how to party. The DJ always sets the vibe for a good party and he did great with this one! A very fun wedding indeed, and only a short walk home for me, perfect! A Lafayette Hotel wedding is the way to go!

Rancho Santa Fe Wedding | Rancho Valencia_0125

Rancho Sante Fe Wedding | Rancho Valencia

Rachel and Roy are stunning. Intelligent, kind, and fun, they are definitely a perfect match! It was such a pleasure documenting their wedding at the Rancho Valencia in Rancho Sante Fe. As someone working from the sidelines, I loved to see how involved everyone was in this traditional Jewish wedding. I also loved seeing how the space at the Rancho Valencia itself, contributed to the creative and enchanting vibe with the help of Amorology. From speeches, poetry and skits, everyone participated in the great day in some way, sharing in the couple’s happiness.

Rancho Santa Fe weddings are without a doubt elegant, but I don’t think it gets much better than the Rancho Valencia from a photography point of view. The Rancho Valencia offers the kind of attention to detail that transforms a wedding. There are no plastic neon signs hovering over the bride and groom’s table or around the corner from the guest book and cake. The walls are bright and textured on the outside, and look amazing when contrasted with the charming tile and luscious plants. Of course, Rachel and Roy made the space their own with the rustic garden theme that made the location intimate.

The in-door environment at the Rancho Valencia is just as stylish. Dare I mention the Damien Hirst painting on the wall?! The space was impeccably designed and open. It was perfect for getting ready shots, and for families and friends to gather around the bride and groom for support and good laughs. The late-summer light was, at times, a challenge with the strong rays of an August sun beaming down on all. And yet, there is nothing more beautiful than when it filled the rooms from open windows and danced off the people and objects, or began to sink and cast that warm glow, unique to Southern California.

At the end of the day, there’s a special venue for every couple. But what I’ve noticed about Rancho Santa Fe weddings is that a couple doesn’t have to compromise their styles. A Rancho Santa Fe wedding can be rustic and sophisticated, charming and refined. The Rancho Valencia, it seems, excels at this perfect balancing act.
